The recipients of the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award have been announced

The Indian government has announced the recipients of the 2024 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, honouring exceptional sports achievements. Awardees include Manu Bhaker
(shooting), Harmanpreet Singh (hockey), Praveen Kumar (para athletics), and D Gukesh (chess). While Bhaker’s initial omission caused controversy, the Sports Ministry rectified the
oversight. The Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour, recognises outstanding individual or team performances and has been a symbol of excellence in sports since its
establishment in 1991—1992.
Key Points:
A) The award ceremony for the nominated athletes will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on January 17, where they will be presented their accolades by the President
of India.
B) Neeraj Chopra, who secured a silver medal in the javelin throw at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is ineligible for the Khel Ratna award as he has previously received this honour.
C) In addition, shooters Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh, along with wrestler Aman Sehrawat, all of whom earned medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, are poised to receive the
Arjuna Award, which is recognized as India’s second-highest sporting distinction.
