India reported a 7.93% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 compared to 2019, according to its 4th Biennial Update Report to the UNFCCC. The country remains committed
to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, as pledged during COP26. The energy sector accounted for 75.66% of emissions, while forests sequestered 522 million tonnes of C02,
reducing 22% of total emissions, reflecting India’s commitment to sustainable development and climate action.
Key Points:
A) India has pledged to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations and keep global warming to less than 20C, with efforts to keep it to 1.50C over pre-industrial levels, as a party to the
Paris Agreement.
B) India consistently submits its Biennial Update Repons (BURs) to the UNFCCC, detailing updates on its national greenhouse gas inventories, mitigation strategies, and the support it
has received.
C) In 2020, India’s total greenhouse gas emissions, excluding Land User Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF), reached 2,959 million tonnes of C02 equivalent (C02e).
